The basics

Q01What is an ethanol (bioethanol) fire?
It's a real-flame fire that runs on liquid bioethanol, a fuel made by fermenting plants like sugarcane or corn. The fuel sits in a stainless steel burner, you light it, and you get a proper orange flame. There's no gas line, no power and no chimney.
Q02Do they actually give off heat?
Yes, real heat. EcoSmart burners put out about 2 kW for the small AB3 up to about 6 kW for the AB8 and Pop 8. A Flex 50 (XL900 burner) is about 4 kW and suits a space of around 60 m². Think of it as a cosy feature fire for a living area. It's not a whole-house heater, so for that I'd still point you at ducted or a split system.
Q03Ethanol, gas, wood or electric: what's the difference?
Wood and gas need a flue or chimney and, for gas, a gas fitter and a line run in. Electric has no real flame. Ethanol sits in the middle: a real flame you can put almost anywhere, with no flue and no connections. The trade-off is that you refill it by hand and the fuel costs more per hour than gas.
Q04Who makes them?
We sell EcoSmart Fire, made by the Australian MAD Design Group. EcoSmart burners meet the ACCC safety mandate for bioethanol burners in Australia, and are also certified to UL 1370 (USA) and EN 16647 (Europe).
Safety

Q05Are ethanol fires safe?
Yes, when you use them the right way. EcoSmart burners meet the ACCC safety mandate for bioethanol burners, and e-NRG fuel bottles come with a flame arrester built into the spout. The golden rules: never refill a lit or warm burner, never leave it burning when nobody's home, keep anything that can burn well clear, and keep a smoke alarm working nearby.
Q06Can I refill it while it's burning or still warm?
Never. Put the flame out with the lid, then wait until the burner is completely cool before you refill. Pouring fuel on a hot burner is how accidents happen.
Q07Is it OK with kids and pets around?
The glass and steel get hot, just like any fire. The Flex has a glass fire screen built in that sits flush with the frame, and most freestanding models have a glass screen too. Keep little ones and pets supervised, and never leave a lit fire alone.
Q08Does it give off smoke or fumes?
There's no smoke, soot or ash. Good bioethanol burns down to heat, water vapour and a little carbon dioxide. It does use oxygen like any flame, which is why each model has a minimum room size (see the next section). Use e-NRG fuel only, because cheap or impure fuel is what causes smells.
Fuel, burn time & running costs

Q09How long does one fill last?
It depends on the burner. The AB3 holds 2.5 L and runs about 8–11 hours. The BK5 holds 5 L for about 7–11 hours, and the XL900 in a Flex 50 holds 9 L for about 8–13 hours. Turning the flame down makes it last longer.
Q10Can I turn the flame up and down?
Yes. You slide the burner lid open or closed with the lighting rod to make the flame bigger or smaller. XL burners also come with baffles, and the AB8 comes with an efficiency ring, to steady the flame and save fuel.
Where can it go? Ventilation & outdoors

Q11Does it need a flue or chimney?
No. There's no flue, chimney, vent or gas line. That's why ethanol fires suit apartments, renovations and spots where gas or wood just won't work.
Q12Does the room need ventilation?
Yes, a normal amount. Every model lists a minimum room size, from about 40 m³ for the small burners up to about 115 m³ for the biggest. A Flex 50 needs 110 m³ with all flame, or 80 m³ with the box layout. If your room is smaller, crack a window or leave the door to the next room open. We'll check this for you when we measure up.
Q13Can I use it outdoors?
Yes. Flex, the fire tables, fire pits and most burners are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoors, wind is the enemy, so a glass fire screen helps and saves fuel. Pop the lid on and use a cover when it's not in use. If rain gets into the burner it won't light until it's cleaned and dried.
Q14Can I use an outdoor fire table inside?
Some can, but they need extra parts for indoor use, and a standalone burner needs a top tray built into the setting when it goes inside. Tell us where it's going and we'll make sure you get the right parts.
Q15Can I put a TV above it?
Often, yes. EcoSmart publishes TV clearance guidance for the Flex, so we'll check the distances for your size before you build the wall.
Installation, council & no gas

Q16How hard is it to install?
Freestanding fires, tables and pits just need unboxing. The Flex is a zero-clearance box, so it can be framed straight into timber or metal studs and is ready for the finishing touches in less than an hour. You don't need a gas fitter or an electrician.
Q17I've got an old open fireplace. Can I use that?
Yes, and it's one of the most popular upgrades. A Heritage insert or a Fireplace Grate drops into the existing opening. Send us a photo and the opening size and we'll tell you which one fits.
Using it day to day

Q18How do I light it?
Fill the burner, dip the tip of the lighting rod into the fuel, light the rod with the long lighter, then touch it back into the burner. That's it. Watch the how-to video for your burner first.
Q19How do I put it out?
Use the hook on the end of the lighting rod to slide or flip the lid over the burner, and it smothers the flame. Never blow it out and never use water.
Q20How do I refill it?
Once the burner is completely cool, put the jerry can nozzle into the filling point and press the button. It stops by itself when the burner reaches MAX. Wipe up any spill with a dry cloth, then a damp one, and let it dry before you light it.
Q21What comes in the box?
Most models include the burner, lighting rod, long lighter, a 5 L jerry can with a safety spout, a bottle adaptor and, on the Flex, black glass “charcoal” and the glass fire screen. Fuel is extra.
Cleaning & care

Q22How do I clean it?
Clean the burner about every 50 litres of fuel, or sooner if you see black marks around the opening. When it's empty and cold, lift it out and wash it in hot soapy water (it can even go in the dishwasher face down), rinse and let it dry fully. Wipe stainless with a stainless cleaner along the grain.
Q23How do I look after an outdoor one?
Keep the lid on the burner and use the fitted cover when it's not in use. Concrete fire tables like a coat of sealer about every six months. Teak goes silver-grey over time, which is normal, and you can oil it if you like the honey colour.
Buying, warranty, finance & delivery

Q24What warranty do I get?
EcoSmart gives a 1–2 year manufacturer's warranty depending on the product, covering faults in materials and workmanship, plus your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Keep your receipt. If anything goes wrong, contact us first and we'll deal with EcoSmart for you.
Q25Can I get a quote for a few items first?
Yes. Hit “Add to quote” on any product and your quote list builds as you go. When you're done, send it to yourself and to us, and we'll come back with a price that includes delivery and install.
Figures are a guide only; burn time and running costs vary with flame setting, fuel price and conditions. Manufacturer warranty terms apply, plus your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
